Our Mission and Roles

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, issues-oriented grassroots political organization of women and men of all ages and backgrounds. The League encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Formed in 1920 when women first won the right to vote, the LWV is dedicated to the principles of democratic government supported by well informed citizenry. The League works to increase understanding of issues, and influence public policy, through education and advocacy at the local, state and national level. LWVCC does not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

You are invited to join this nationally respected public service organization whose founders and current members are committed to promoting active and informed citizen participation in all levels of government.

The League of Women Voters has three separate and distinct roles.

  • Voter Service/Citizen Education: LWV presents unbiased non-partisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

  • Study: LWV studies issues and is non-partisan in studying issues.

  • Action/Advocacy: LWV becomes partisan in Action/Advocacy after determining the will of its members through study and consensus.

To conduct LWVCC voter service and citizen education activities, LWVCC uses funds from the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts Scharfman Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy and is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation.

Our Vision, Beliefs, and Intentions guide our activities.
